Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society

Members of math club  at Prescott High School have the opportunity  to become a member of Mu Alpha Theta, an internationally recognized honor  society for math scholars at the high school and junior college levels.  The purpose of Mu Alpha Theta is to promote scholarship in mathematics along with enjoyment and understanding of the  subject.  To be initiated into the  Prescott High School Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta in the spring, students must  meet the requirements of Mu Alpha Theta International and be an active  participant in math club during the school year.  For Active Membership in Mu Alpha Theta students must have:

  1. Completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics & be enrolled in a fifth semester of college prep mathematics (Algebra 1-2 and Geometry completed; enrolled in Algebra 3-4)
  2. Maintained a B or better average in all college prep  mathematics classes AND maintained a B or better average in all classes
  3. Earned a minimum number of 75 service points in  the PHS chapter (see chart below).
  4. Paid chapter dues of $10

Ways to earn Service Points

Attending regular math club meetings 5 points each
Participation in Math Contests
High School Math League (5 per year) 5 points each
Mu Alpha Theta contests (5 per year) 5 points each
State Math Contest 10 points
American Mathematics Contests 10 points
AMC< 12 or AMC< 10
Participation in fund raisers 10 points
Attending a field trip
NAU Math Day 10 points
ERAU County Math Day 10 points
Entering the research contest for County Math 20 points
Helping with the 6th grade math challenge after school or on a Saturday up to 20 points
Designing a display for the math trophy case 20 points
Entering a math project in the science fair 30 points
Helping with special projects outside of school 10 – 20 points
Tutoring (points will depend upon lenth of time) up to 25 points
Miscellaneous projects may be added to this list each year

Graduation Honor Cords

Graduating seniors who are members of Mu Alpha Theta  National Honor Society, have maintained  the appropriate grade point average and have earned the necessary number of  service points may wear the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Cord during the graduation  ceremony.
